2020 Tax Protection have come across some of the new Record Check visits being undertaken by HMRC. Although the consultation period has only just ended, it is apparent that HMRC have been undertaking a number of these Checks before the consultation period was over. They are being called “Business Record Checks” or even “Business Assurance Visits”. In some cases the accountant is not being told of the impending visits. Sometimes HMRC asks for the client to contact them to make an appointment and others simply state they are coming at a set date and time and you should contact them if this is not convenient.
There a couple of areas to consider here. Firstly, clients should be reminded of the importance of record keeping generally. Secondly, you need to consider whether you need to attend the visit. The very early signs are that attendance throughout is not necessary but attendance at the meeting stage may be or even request that any comments by HMRC are put to the accountant in writing. Either way, it may be prudent to remind clients they should let you know as soon as they receive any communications from HMRC so you can discuss your potential involvement. We will keep 2020 Members updated.
