Master Sage 50 Projects

Master Sage 50 Projects, BOM, Alternatives and Works Orders using Excel2Sage and Trace-IT

“I want to use Sage 50 to help me manage my assemblies and show me project profitability. It would be great if I could also have a simple bar-coding system in the warehouse”

Assembling components to build a finished product is a very common requirement for Sage 50 users. This could be for something as simple as a food hamper to a more complex engineering part. The steps are pretty simple in theory:

  1. Create the components in the stock module.
  2. Create the top level finished product in the stock module and complete the BOM (Bill Of Material) tab showing all components.

And this is where the problems start:

  1. How do you imports components quickly?
  2. How do you create alternatives for components to allow these to be used if needed?
  3. How do you raise a Works Order to control products being assembled?
  4. How do you create a Fulfillment Report showing shortages where alternatives may also be needed?
  5. How do you use barcodes to automate the above processes?
  6. How do you implement batch traceability on components to allow tracking and product recalls? And this is where the problems start:

The standard approach would be to either use many Excel spreadsheet to control the above or consider buying :

  • the full Sage 50 manufacturing modules or upgrading to Sage 200 1000 suite
  • these are not insignificant decisions to make and are likely to be both costly and time consuming.

Well the good news is that Excel2Sage www.excel2sage.co.uk can cater for the above requirements when used in conjunction with Trace-IT, a web based stock control and bar-coding system which is designed to be used with Sage 50.

In summary, the procedure is:

  1. Use Excel2Sage to import the components and finished goods into Sage 50 from Excel with just ONE CLICK!
  2. Complete the BOM tab in Sage 50
  3. Enter sales orders in Sage 50
    a. Sales Orders could also be imported using Excel2Sage (e.g. from your website)
  4. Use Trace-IT to import outstanding sales orders and project product issues from Sage 50
  5. Create Alternative Products in Trace-IT for components
    a. Sage 50 cannot cater for alternative products
  6. Use the Fulfillment Report in Trace-IT to see which BOMs need to be assembled to meet demand
    a. and which alternatives need to be used due to shortages
  7. Assemble the BOMs in Trace-IT
    a. using alternatives where necessary
  8. Complete BOM Completion and stock transactions in Trace-IT and automatically post details back to Sage 50
    a. This could be done using scanners and barcodes
