A number of accountants have recently asked if HMRC are routinely arranging visits by telephone direct with clients. These visits are not confirmed in writing and the agent is not being told.
It is common that such visits are confirmed in writing but not always. Whilst unable to confirm or deny that this is a deliberate ploy by HMRC to avoid involving the accountant this can be the result. 2020 Tax Protection would advise member firms to contact clients and remind them of the need to let you know HMRC have made contact. This will become even more important with some of the new compliance initiatives being piloted by HMRC.
