Making Tax Digital Action Pack – Getting Ready for Digital Tax

The tax system is changing. HMRC proposals mean the filing of information digitally. This commences with above VAT threshold businesses for VAT Reporting from April 2019 and (we predict) for all other businesses after 2020.

For accountants this represents a new way of doing things and a complete change from the usual way of dealing with clients and HMRC. This will have a BIG effect on UK accounting firms in the short and medium term.

So what’s the first step to digital tax?

Accountants need to educate their team on HMRC proposals and the changes, and keep on top of technical issues and HMRC announcements between now and implementation date.

Appraise their client base and identify exempt clients and segment between above VAT threshold  and below VAT threshold  to work a plan to digitise the accounts of these clients in order of priority.

Identify specific clients that will need additional assistance in moving to a digital environment.

Prepare a strategy for moving all eligible clients to the cloud. This will involve training the team and planning a campaign to educate clients on the changes and outlining the benefits to them of going digital.

How can 2020 help?

2020 have teamed up with Martyn Ingles, top tax lecturer and Kevin Salter, I.T. specialist, to put together an Action Pack outlining technical changes and the marketing material you need to get your clients digital.
